Our excursion to the National Art Gallery

On Thursday 20th November, the Year 3/4 classes went on an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria.  We looked at many different types of artworks created by many artists. We saw some abstract art, modern art and traditional art.

We had guides who told us many interesting facts about some of the collections at the gallery.  We had playlunch in the garden at the back of the gallery where there are many statues and other forms of art, including a large climbing frame, shaped like a sphere.

Some of the children visited the exhibition called, ‘Express Yourself’ where we looked at the work done by artists, using clothing, shoes and other items.  We also created our own art work in the children’s art room.

Some people’s comments:

‘My favourite thing at the gallery was a piece of abstract art. It was an amazing machine that had textas hanging from its nose, and went around drawing on a huge piece of paper. It was fun and it had lots of cool artwork.’

‘My favourite was a piece of art, which was called London scribbles. It had a background like a barcode and there was a plank of wood about 11centimetres wide and had wire hanging off the wood, when you moved side to side the picture looked funny.

After the art gallery, we went to the Fitzroy Gardens where we had lunch and we looked at the fairy garden, the English Tudor village, Captain Cook’s cottage and the conservatory. We also had a game of ‘keepings off’ near the fairy garden.
